I grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Kent County and lived there for the first 15 years of my life. I went to Bard College and majored in Languages and Literature with a focus on Literature. While attending Bard, I was elected to serve as the Student Representative on the Faculty Tenure Board and worked in Bard’s Response to Rape and Associated Violence Education (BRAVE). In BRAVE, we educated the community and offered 24 hour support for students that were survivors of sexual violence. I was elected chairman of BRAVE for my Junior Year. My Senior Thesis was an exploration the word tragedy in different times and cultures.
After graduating from Bard College, I started a career teaching and have been working in the educational field for the past 24 years. I have taught English, History, and Philosophy in the traditional classroom, and taught Environmental Science, History, and Team Building in Outdoor Education. I started my career teaching middle school English, Remedial English, and English as a Second Language in Los Angeles Unified School District. After teaching English in Los Angeles and Reno, I thought I would be classroom teacher for the rest of my career, but I missed the Chesapeake Bay and being outside. With that in mind, I took a job teaching History, Ecology, and Team Building at Echo Hill Outdoor School in Kent County, MD. Since then, I have been involved with Outdoor Education and Experiential Learning in one way or another at a series of jobs at The Swain School in Allentown, PA, Sultana Education Foundation in Chestertown MD, The Gunston School, and now Washington College in the Career Development Office.
