The City of Erlanger, Kentucky’s Finance/HR Department is hiring an Accountant. This job posting will be active until Tuesday, January 28th at 5pm. Salary up to $62,500
Position Summary
Under the general guidance of the Assistant Finance/HR Director, the Accountant will assist with budgeting and financial planning for the City and/or day-to-day financial operations of the Finance Department. The Accountant develops and oversees the administration of policies, procedures and work products in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws, policies and procedures and generally accepted accounting principles. The Accountant communicates goals and policies to other employees throughout the City organization. The Accountant has responsibility for a high degree of accuracy and quality in all financial transactions and in developing systems to efficiently and accurately record and report the City’s financial activity to all interested parties who rely on this material to make decisions. The Accountant has primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of staff, public officials, auditors, agency representatives and the general public. This requires a high degree of sensitivity to the needs of others and the ability to communicate technical issues in a clear understandable manner.
Essential Functions
- Assists the Assistant Finance/HR Director in administering all City Finance Department activities including general ledger maintenance; preparing journal entries, performing account analysis and reconciliations.
- Maintains, balances and reconciles various cash accounts of the City.
- Manages the accounts payable process for the City including reviewing expense vouchers documentation for completeness and accuracy as well as processing accounts payable checks to City vendors.
- Measures and accounts for actual versus budget expense variances on a monthly basis.
- Assists department heads and other city staff with questions or issues relating to accounting processes or records. Identifies and resolves accounting issues; researches issues, errors and problems and develops and provides recommendations to ensure issues are fully resolved.
- Assists with preparation of budgets and/or strategic plans. Assists with year-end closing and preparation of annual financial statements in accordance with accounting guidelines and GAAP.
- Assists with preparation of work papers and responds to questions for annual audit by outside independent auditors.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Skills and Abilities
Education:
- Minimum: Associates Degree in Accounting
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
Experience: Equivalent combination of education and experience
Computer Skills: Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to learn and master accounting software
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with some travel to different sites; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend training.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
