The Washington Program at the Institute for Responsible Citizenship is dedicated to cultivating some of the nation’s foremost African American male college students. Each year, 12 young men are selected to participate in a rigorous two-summer experience that includes high-level paid internships tailored to their career aspirations and interests, intensive academic seminars, professional development workshops, free summer housing, and a wide variety of enriching social activities.
Since 2003, over 260 young men, not just of exceptional talent but also of commendable character, have carved out remarkable paths in diverse fields. Our alumni roster boasts of 5 Rhodes Scholars, 9 Truman Scholars, 18 PhDs, and numerous other distinguished professionals. What makes a strong candidate for the Washington Program?
With only twelve spots available nationwide, our program is exceptionally competitive. We’re looking for students who excel academically, lead with integrity, and show a deep commitment to making a difference. Is there a specific career field or major the Washington Program looks for in a candidate?
We accept applicants of all career interests and backgrounds.
Is the program one summer or two?
Our program is intended for all scholars to complete two summers with us in Washington DC. This includes two summers of internships which don’t have to be the same each session.
What if I have another internship for the Summer of 2025?
If your internship is in Washington, DC, you are welcome to keep it and still apply to the Washington Program. If you don’t have an internship lined up, don’t worry—the Institute will help you find one that aligns with your career goals. You can visit this page to see some of the places our scholars have interned over the years. This list is not exhaustive, and if there is an organization not included here, we will work to find the right opportunity for you.
Are the internships you help provide paid?
We strive to secure paid opportunities through our partner organizations. However, if an organization is unable to offer a stipend but the opportunity aligns with your goals, the Institute will provide a $5,000 stipend for the eight-week program in Washington, DC. In addition, we offer free housing at George Washington University.
What else does the Washington Program offer beyond providing internships?
Beyond internships, we offer personalized professional development workshops, rigorous academic seminars, private meetings with prominent leaders, and social activities. Most importantly, you’ll become part of a community of peers and alumni who will support you long after the two summers have ended.
What are the dates for the program next summer?
Move-in is May 31, 2025 and move-out is July 26, 2025.
