Program Overview

The Center for Career Development is pleased to offer the Externship Program during Winter Break, January 12–16, 2026. This short-term experience is designed to help students explore career paths, build professional connections, and gain insight into workplace environments.

What Is an Externship?

An externship is a brief, observational experience—often referred to as job shadowing—that allows students to explore career fields and industries. Unlike internships, externships are shorter in duration (typically 1–3 days) and focus on exposure rather than hands-on work. They help students:

  • Clarify career interests
  • Network with professionals
  • Make informed decisions about academic and career goals

Eligibility

All currently enrolled Washington College students are eligible to apply—regardless of major or class year. Freshmen (First-year), sophomores, juniors, and seniors are encouraged to participate.

Students will be matched with host employers based on:

  • Stated interests (up to 3 choices)
  • Quality of application materials
  • Engagement with the Center for Career Development

Program Dates & Commitment

Externships will take place January 12–16, 2026, the week before the spring semester begins. Experiences typically last 1–3 days and are observational in nature.

Student Requirements

To participate, students must:

  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (students below this threshold must provide a brief explanation)
  • Submit a resume (Career Center support is available)
  • Select up to three preferred externship experiences
  • Be responsible for travel, lodging, and related expenses

Key Dates

  • Application Deadline: October 31, 2025
  • Notification of Placement: Approximately November 14, 2025
  • Mandatory Prep Workshops: November 20 or 21, and December 3, 2025
  • Deadline to Contact Host Employer: December 4, 2025

Applications will be submitted via a Qualtrics form . Follow the prompts and ensure your application is complete. You will receive confirmation from the program coordinator once your submission is received. Use this handy QUICK REFERENCE LIST TO VIEW ALL THE AVAILABLE EXTERNSHIP HOSTS.

Complete your application using the Qualtrics form [linked here]. Your preferences will be carefully reviewed, and you will most likely be matched with one of your top three choices.

Once matched, you are responsible for contacting your host employer to coordinate the specific day(s) you will visit their facility during the externship week: January 12–16, 2026.
